Lockpicks wont work. Sure they are a safer investment in the long run seeing as they don't loose value. Problem is they don't drop all that often and there is no place to farm them cause they drop anywhere in the game in HM (NM too in EotN). You also would need more of them to finish a trade at 1,200 per pick. The only thing I can see that would make anyone even consider trading anything but ecto is if it dropped to a price range lower than 1,200g.
